Khoun Kong Leng is an emerald karst spring in Hinboun, where underground water emerges below limestone mountains and creates one of the clearest and most distinctive water landscapes around Thakhek.

THE SPRING

The water comes through the mountain

Khoun Kong Leng is fed by underground water moving through the limestone around Ban Nakhou. That is why the lake looks so different from an ordinary pond. The water emerges from the karst clear enough to reveal rock, fish and changing shades of green beneath the surface. Before choosing a kayak, viewpoint or other activity, spend time at the bank and read the spring itself. The colour is not the whole story. What makes the place memorable is seeing underground karst water become a visible landscape.

THE NAME

Why the lake is called the Evening Gong

The current Khammouane Tourism account preserves a local story behind the name. Villagers are said to have heard a gong sounding from beneath the water or from the surrounding caves, particularly around Buddhist holy days. That tradition explains why Khoun Kong Leng is sometimes translated as Evening Gong Lake and why the water carries more meaning locally than a simple swimming attraction. The legend belongs to the place even if the sound itself remains a story rather than something a visitor should expect to hear.

THE CHANGE

This is no longer an undeveloped secret pool

Khoun Kong Leng now has a developed visitor base. The current official listing includes parking, a restaurant, public toilets, camping, a viewpoint, boat service and several paid activities such as kayaking and zipline experiences. That changes the atmosphere compared with older descriptions of a remote spring reached on rough tracks. The development is worth acknowledging rather than hiding. Use the facilities if they help, but keep the spring itself at the centre of the visit. The water and limestone are still the reason to make the journey.

THE SWIM

Do not assume the main lake is open to swimmers

Tourism Laos and recent visitor guidance have long treated the main spring with particular care. The consistent advice is to ask locally before entering the water and to use only the designated downstream swimming area when permission is given, rather than treating the central lake as an unrestricted swimming pool. Fishing is also prohibited in the traditional visitor guidance. Current activities at the site may evolve, so follow the rules posted or explained on the day even when an older guide says something different.

Let the local rules protect what you came to see

Bring quick dry clothes, small cash and protection for anything that should stay dry. If you take a boat or kayak, wear the life jacket and follow the current operating route. Do not fish, and do not enter the main lake simply because the water looks inviting. Ask staff or village representatives where swimming is currently allowed and use only that area. The clearest water around Thakhek is worth treating as a place to understand before treating it as a playground.

How far is Khoun Kong Leng from Thakhek?

Khammouane Tourism currently directs visitors about thirty kilometres north from Thakhek on Route 13, then about twenty kilometres along a paved road from the Ban Nakhou junction to the attraction.

What are the opening hours for Khoun Kong Leng?

The current official attraction page lists daily opening from 08:00 to 17:00. Plan the return drive in daylight rather than arriving close to closing time.

Is Khoun Kong Leng free to visit?

Yes. Khammouane Tourism currently lists free entry for Lao and foreign visitors. Kayaking, viewpoint access and other adventure activities have separate fees that can change seasonally.

Can you swim in Khoun Kong Leng?

Do not assume the main spring pool is open for unrestricted swimming. Long standing visitor guidance asks travellers to check with local staff and use the permitted downstream area rather than entering the sacred source itself.

Why is Khoun Kong Leng so blue or green?

The water comes from an underground karst spring and is exceptionally clear. Light, depth, limestone and the surrounding vegetation can make the pool appear turquoise, emerald or deep green at different moments.

    About 50 km by Route 13 and local road

    Khammouane Tourism currently directs visitors about 30 kilometres north from Thakhek on Route 13, then about 20 kilometres along a paved road from the Ban Nakhou junction to the site.

  2. Opening hours

    Daily 08:00 to 17:00

    The current official attraction page lists operation from 08:00 to 17:00. Allow enough daylight for the drive back rather than arriving close to closing.

  3. Entrance

    Currently free

    Khammouane Tourism currently lists free entry for Lao and foreign visitors. Optional activities such as kayaking, the viewpoint, ATV rides and other adventure services are charged separately and prices can change seasonally.
