Go west and stop looking for a landmark

Don Det is commonly described in two simple halves: sunrise side to the east and sunset side to the west. For this activity, the western bank is the whole plan. Walk or cycle until the river view opens up, then choose a riverside terrace, bungalow deck or quiet stretch of bank. There is no single official viewpoint to reach; the useful decision is getting away from obstructions and settling in before the light starts changing quickly.

The Mekong around Don Det is broad enough to hold the colour and reflections long after the solar disc has dropped. Recent and current guides still single out the west side for sunset, while Don Det's Wikimedia record shows exactly why: cloud layers, pirogues, small islands and still water can completely change the scene from one evening to the next. Arrive for golden hour, but do not pack up the moment the sun touches the horizon.
