From the hill, the Mekong stops being a strip at the edge of town and becomes the line that organises the whole landscape. The golden Buddha faces that view, with Pakse spread across the opposite bank. Late afternoon is the natural rhythm because the light changes faster than the site itself.

Do not stop at the panorama
The seated Buddha is the obvious landmark, but the temple grounds continue beyond it. Give yourself enough time to walk rather than taking the view, one photograph and the road back. Wat Phou Salao works because it is both a religious place and a lookout.
